Diem Blockchain was a digital currency project initiated by Facebook, later rebranded as Meta Platforms, Inc. Overview

Diem Blockchain was a permissioned blockchain network developed to support a digital currency called Diem. Initially announced in June 2019 as Libra, the project was spearheaded by Facebook and a consortium of companies known as the Libra Association. The primary goal was to create a stable digital currency that could be used for everyday transactions, particularly in regions with limited access to traditional banking services. The Diem Association, an independent entity, was responsible for governing the network and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

The project underwent several changes, including a rebranding from Libra to Diem in December 2020, in response to regulatory concerns. Despite these efforts, Diem faced ongoing challenges, to its eventual discontinuation in early 2022.

How it works

Diem Blockchain was designed as a permissioned blockchain, meaning that only authorized participants could validate transactions and maintain the network. This contrasts with public blockchains like Bitcoin, where anyone can participate in the network. The Diem network utilized a consensus mechanism called Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT), which is designed to ensure network reliability even if some nodes fail or act maliciously.

The Diem digital currency was intended to be a stablecoin, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value by pegging it to a reserve of assets. This reserve was to be composed of a basket of low-volatility assets, including fiat currencies and government securities. The goal was to minimize price fluctuations, making Diem suitable for everyday transactions.

Applications

Diem was envisioned to have several applications, primarily focused on financial inclusion and reducing transaction costs. Key applications included:

- Cross-border payments: Diem aimed to simplify and reduce the cost of international money transfers, particularly benefiting individuals in developing countries with limited access to banking services.
- E-commerce: By providing a stable and efficient payment method, Diem sought to facilitate online transactions and expand access to digital marketplaces.

USDT">Relationship to USDT

While Diem and Tether (USDT) are both stablecoins, they differ in several key aspects. Tether is a widely used stablecoin that operates on multiple public blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. It is pegged to the US dollar, with each USDT token backed by reserves held by Tether Limited.

In contrast, Diem was intended to be backed by a basket of currencies and assets, rather than a single currency. This approach aimed to provide greater stability and reduce reliance on any single fiat currency. Additionally, Diem operated on a permissioned blockchain, while Tether operates on public blockchains, allowing for broader participation in the network.
